Sex during pregnancy: Should we, shouldn’t we?

Sex during pregnancy: Should we, shouldn't we?

by Editorial Team

Thinking of abstaining from sex just because you are pregnant? No need, say experts. In order to answer common queries that come to most pregnant couples' mind, we speak to Sonali Shivlani, an internationally certified pregnancy counsellor and Dr Zinal Unadkat, a leading paediatrician, on this topic.

Till what stage of pregnancy can a couple have sex?

Generally, the recommendation is abstinence in the first trimester and then again in the last four weeks of pregnancy. But I would ideally suggest first checking with the doctor as each pregnancy is different and a medical check is important to determine what is safe. A woman who has a recurring abortion history or premature delivery is advised against having sex during pregnancy.

What can go wrong if they indulge in intercourse during these stages?

In the first trimester, the placenta implants and all foetal organs are developed. Excessive jerks or jostling could pose a risk to the pregnancy. It can also lead to a miscarriage.

In the last one month, if sex is unprotected then it can lead to infection probabilities especially if the water bag breaks. There is also a risk of premature labour. (Read: The most comprehensive guide to first trimester dos and don'ts you'll ever need!)

Can sex cause any harm to the baby?

The baby is safe within the amniotic fluid covered by membranes so there isn't any risk to it but too much movement and jerk can cause pain to the mother.

Are there any precautions that couples need to keep in mind?

Avoid any weight on the abdomen and avoid excessive acrobats. Stick to traditional positions. You may want to use a lubricant as the woman might be experiencing vaginal dryness and itching due to hormonal changes. (Read: Try lubricants to give your woman that orgasm she deserves!)

Which are the safe sex positions couples can opt for?

Some safe sex positions are woman on top, doggy style and even man on top but with not much weight on the woman's abdomen – if there is any discomfort during this, the couple should avoid it. Cuddling and foreplay can be just as satisfying – it is important to be emotionally connected to be able to welcome the newborn with love in this world. (Read: Top sex positions: Rear Entry or Doggy Style)

Is not having intercourse throughout the nine months of pregnancy a better option?

Not really! There is no reason why a couple cannot satisfy their desires. At times, due to hormonal changes, women experience a peak in their libido during pregnancy. In some cases when a pregnancy crosses term, sex is advised to help soften the cervix as sperm has the ability to do so. Also, nipple stimulation can cause uterine contractions. Sex is considered a fun way to induce labour. However, it is advised to consult your doctor before you try this.

Is there a Viagra-like drug for women?

Is there a Viagra-like drug for women?

by Sameer Jha

Everyone on the planet has probably heard about Viagra – the magic blue pill that helps gets things up. But is there a Viagra-like drug for women? The answer is Yes actually. There are some of variations of the drug produced by Indian and Chinese manufacturers offer it for women too. But, are they safe? Or do they work? These are questions that women experiencing a low sex drive have. We at health.india.com try to give you some answers.

How does regular Viagra work?

Viagra is a wonder drug that has brought sex and confidence back into the lives of many men suffering from erectile dysfunction. It works by improving the blood flow to the genitals thereby facilitating an erection. It does so by blocking an enzyme called PDE5 in the penis. (Read: Viagra and Erectile Dysfunction)

Will it work for women?

Viagra isn't actually a drug which helps with arousal. It just improves the blood flow when you're aroused. Most women face sexual arousal problems for a variety of reasons. Menopause, stress, and seeing their children go away are just some of the reasons for their loss of interest in sex. Some experts believed that Viagra should work similarly for women (the way it does for men), engorging the clitoris and making sex more pleasurable. (Things you really ought to know about the clitoris)

A research team separated two groups of women with sexual arousal problems. One group was given the blue pill, the other was simply given a placebo. The research showed that women, who took Viagra, achieved sexual satisfaction more often than those who simply took the placebo. However, the US FDA does not approve the use of conventional Viagra for women. Nor is there any registered pharmaceutical company that manufactures a version of the drug for females. Further research is still necessary, and we certainly hope that in the coming years women facing sexual dysfunction should also get medicinal help the way men  can avail it.

Are there any options out there currently?

In India, a cream called Alura was released in Hyderabad according to a TOI report from August 28, 2002. Containing LArgine, an amino acid and Methol that makes the female genitals more sensitive and produces a tingling sensation, Alura is nothing like Viagra but treats Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD). First of all it is not a pill, but a cream that's applied externally. Also, it is made from natural ingredients and promises to have no side-effects. The drug's website claim it will 'enhance women's gynaecological functions and improve  physiological disorders resulting from age-related oestrogen reduction'.

Another drug called Fibanserin was developed as an antidepressant but after a few tests it was found that it improved sexual desire in women. It was touted to be the next big drug with some estimates claiming its market to be $2 billion. It was sent to the US FDA for approval, but unfortunately its production was stopped following a negative report.

So we guess the ladies will have to wait a while before they find their magic pill. In the meanwhile, we recommend that the ladies don't try any of the so-called magic drugs on the market that claim to have Viagra-like effects since there is nothing that has been approved by the USFDA, the DCGI or any other pharmaceutical authority. The Anvil: Hit the G-spot with this advanced sex position

The Anvil: Hit the G-spot with this advanced sex position

by Nirmalya Dutta

It's been a while since we last wrote about sex positions. We got caught up with the Sexopedia series and kind of just forgot about it, but don't worry we are back.  Earlier, we had done posts on the missionary, spooning, rear entry, standing and woman-on-top sex positions. Today we are here with a variation of the missionary – the anvil sex position.

How to do it: While it's a variation of the missionary, it's considered a more advanced position. The basic difference is instead of the woman's legs on the bed; the position sees the woman's leg on her partner's shoulders ergo the name the Anvil.

Pros: The position is amazing because it allows deeper penetration and allows the penis to hit the elusive G-spot. Also, the male's pubic bone will come in contact with the clitoris for some delightful clitoral stimulation which will be like a double jackpot and should make it too hot to handle. (Read: Does the G-Spot really exist?)

Cons: This position is definitely not for everyone. Both partners need to be athletic and flexible. Holding the position is tough and many people find that they can't hold this position for long. It can also be painful if your man's penis is bigger than average or you have a tight vagina. A long penis might actually end up hitting the cervix instead of the G-spot which might make it more painful than pleasurable. (Read: Guide to first-time sex for men)

Five ways smoking during pregnancy can harm your baby

Five ways smoking during pregnancy can harm your baby

by Editorial Team

A lot of people smoke even though they are fully aware of the negative effects it has on our bodies. However, there's a difference between harming your own body and harming a child who has not even been born yet. We will give you five reasons expectant mothers need to kick the butt:

Smoking makes your baby's brain smaller

According to a study, smoking during pregnancy can lead to babies with smaller brains which make them more prone to stress and anxiety. The reason behind it, scientists suspect, is that smoking affects the development of foetus by destroying neurons and reducing oxygen supply to the womb.

Smoking is likely to give your baby meningitis

According to British researchers, smoking during pregnancy trebles the chances of the baby developing meningitis. Meningitis is caused by an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Smoking leads to low weight babies

According to the findings of a research conducted in Spain, it was found that women who smoked during pregnancy gave birth to lighter babies. A research was conducted on 1,216 newly born babies and it was seen that such babies were lighter by 216 grams on an average. For those who don't know, babies born with low birth weight are likely to suffer from malnutrition, developmental disorders, learning disabilities, heart-related issues and a host of other conditions.

Your kid is likelier to suffer from heart disease

According to a study, children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are more susceptible to heart disease because they have lower levels of HDL, than children of non-smokers. By the age of eight, children born to mothers who smoked had HDL levels of about 1.3 millimoles per litre as against a more normal level of 1.5 millimoles per litre among children of non-smoking mothers.

You're likelier to suffer problems during pregnancy

Smoking during pregnancy does not create problems for the baby only after it's born. Even during the pregnancy period and delivery, several problems can arise. When you smoke during pregnancy, your unborn baby gets affected by the chemicals from the cigarette. There is an increased risk for premature rupture of the amniotic sac, placenta previa (a condition where the placenta is placed in an unusual position in the uterus), miscarriage, and neonatal death. (Read: The most comprehensive guide to first trimester dos and don'ts you'll ever need!)

So kick the butt and give your child the best life he or she deserves.

Want a sexy, slim figure without exercise or surgery? Try shapewear

Want a sexy, slim figure without exercise or surgery? Try shapewear

by Kriti Saraswat

Love wearing those figure-hugging dresses and tops but not too confident about your body? You can opt for shapewear – a piece of clothing that snugly fits your body and enhances your contours, giving your bust a slight lift and also shaping up your buttocks, hiding the flab and giving you an hourglass-like figure. It needs to be worn under the dress or top you plan to wear.

You don't always have to opt for surgery or tucks to look your best in that sexy dress. It is a boon for women who aren't too comfortable with the shape of their body but still want to wear the latest trends in fashion. It gives your body an overall lift-up and slimming down, with many promising to bring you two dress sizes down. Even if you aren't on the heavier side but wish to accentuate your assets, you can try this garment as it comes in all sizes.

How to choose one?

There are different varieties of shapewear depending on the flaw you wish to conceal. You can get one which comes with an attached bra and goes all the way down to your thighs. This is ideal for people who want a complete tone-up, especially when you plan to wear a bodycon dress.

There are others which cover individual problem areas like the midriff section, only the bust or the buttocks. They make you look sleeker, highlighting your assets and hiding the flab. These control garments come in two kinds of variety – one is made of very thin fabric which can be worn even under skinny jeans, the other one is slightly firmer made of different fabrics to give more prominent lift.

You can choose from camisoles to waist trimmers to slimming underwear. Though you may find them online, it is best to try them out under the dress you plan to wear before you buy one. It needs to be of a fitted size, neither small nor big or else the end result won't be that appealing. Wearing a size smaller will put extra pressure on your nerves and also make you uncomfortable. On the other hand, a size bigger won't do the trick and you might not see the desired look you want. (Read: Make-up tips to look picture-perfect)

Where can you find one?

These days, even lingerie brands have come up with their own line of shapewear though the names may differ slightly – bodysuit, tummy control, slimmers and so on.

A few popular brands that have this range are:

Jockey
Avirate
Bw!tch
Hanes
You can find outlets of these brands in shopping malls. In case you fail to find one but still want to try shapewear, look online on shopping websites. (Read: Get legs you can show off instantly!)

Sex after heart surgery: Avoid unfamiliar, younger partners

Sex after heart surgery: Avoid unfamiliar, younger partners
by Dr Tilak Suvarna
Today heart surgeries have become really common which makes it extremely important for people to know about post-surgical procedures, most importantly knowing when you can get back to normal life. In our earlier piece, we talked about exercising after heart surgery. In this post, Dr Tilak Suvarna, an interventional cardiologist and Head of Cardiology, Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai writes about sex after heart surgery:
When can a person have sex after surgery?
You should wait at least 4-6 weeks after the event.  In case of a bypass surgery, the patient should wait for their wounds to heal (bypass surgery hyperlink).
Are there any precautions you should take before, during and after intercourse?
One of the most important things is to be well-rested at the time of sexual activity. You should avoid unfamiliar surroundings and unfamiliar partners. If it's a regular partner, that shouldn't cause any problems. But it it's a new partner, particularly someone younger, then there's a chance of more pressure and the heart rate going up. Avoid a heavy meal and alcohol before sex. Most people who've suffered heart attacks during sex have been men who are with a younger and unfamiliar partner. You should also avoid positions that restrict breathing.
What warning signs one should look out for while having intercourse?
The most glaring signs are breathlessness, excessive sweating and light-headedness. All of the above signs indicate that a person's blood pressure is falling and they need to stop. The best remedy is to rest and take a sorbitrate if the person is known to suffer from angina.
People believe that if a heart patient can walk up a flight of stairs after surgery he/she is ready to have sex. Is this true?
Yes, this is true, but it is two flights of stairs not one actually. But see that is a generalized statement that was made, but one must remember that that was made from studies that were done on healthy young men or middle aged men. So, this study stated that a man who can climb two flights of steps without feeling uneasy can have sex, because that is the kind of stress that is put on a person's heart while having sex.   I think it differs from individual to individual, especially in older people. Since older people have weakened orgasms, in order to achieve climax, they are likely to exert themselves to a greater degree.
Does heart surgery affect the virility of a man?
No. But then we do have patients who come to us after surgery and say that their libido is gone or weakened. But there could be other reasons for it, one could be medicines they are taking, but more often than not it is psychological. They are scared and fear that they might get a heart attack while having sex or that they are worried that they may not be able to satisfy their partner. But heart surgery per se does not affect one's libido or erections. (Tips to beat erectile dysfunction)
So blood thinners and other medications do not cause it?
No, blood thinners cannot cause problems in one's libido. But like I said there are certain blood pressure medicines that can cause a loss of libido. But a recent study has shown that it is more psychological. Erectile dysfunction might be caused in people suffering from diabetes but this is not due to heart surgery.
Know your heart, love your heart
More and more Indians are falling prey to heart disease. There are various reasons for this including a sedentary lifestyle, genetic predisposition, pollution, smoking, drinking, a fatty diet and a general ignorance about what causes heart ailments. Want glowing skin? Forget expensive creams and try yoga

Want glowing skin? Forget expensive creams and try yoga

by Pavitra Sampath

Want naturally glowing skin? Well, we have the answer for you – yoga. Yoga gives you a healthy mind and body and in turn makes your skin glow. Here are the top 5 yoga poses you could try to get the flawless glowing skin you always wanted.

In Ayurveda, doctors believe that one's skin is the most important marker of one's health, and says that for one's skin to look healthy it is imperative that it gets a good supply of blood, the body is well oxygenated and all the internal organs function optimally.  In this post we will tell you about postures that increase the blood flow to the face, improves one's digestive system and helps in oxygenating the blood – making one look younger, healthier and more beautiful.

Pachimotasana: This is a forward bending pose that helps the blood to flow to the face. Apart from that, it helps the stomach function better, strengthens the thigh muscles and relaxes the back and arms.

Steps to do this asana:

Sit with your legs stretched out on the floor. Next hold the big toe of your feet with your index finger and thumb. Now, exhale and slowly bend forward and try to touch your forehead to your knees. The key is that your elbows should touch the floor. Do not breath in. Stay in this position for five counts and inhale as you rise back to the sitting position.

Tips to keep in mind: If you have any type of back pain or complaints with your spine, do not do this pose. Moreover, be easy on yourself, you might not be able to touch your knees with your forehead. Know that if you keep at it you will regain your flexibility and be able to do the pose properly. (Read: Beat insomnia with yoga)

Matsyasana: This pose helps relax the facial muscles and strengthens the muscles of the neck and back. It allows controlled flow of blood to the face and increases the amount of oxygen of the blood.

To do this asana, here are the steps:

Lie flat on the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Now straighten your legs, place your arms on either side. Now raise your hips, one side at a time and place your hands under each hip. Bend your elbows and push your upper body off the floor, remember to exhale as you do this. Only raise your chest, and tilt your head backwards. Hold this pose for five counts and inhale as you rest your back back on the floor.

Tips to keep in mind: If you suffer from high blood pressure or have neck/back pain, avoid doing this pose.

Halasana: This pose is great for those who sit for long hours and tend to have bad posture. It stimulates the thyroid glands, parathyroid glands, lungs and abdominal organs, therefore helping the blood rush to your head and face, improves digestion and keeps the hormonal levels in check.

Step to do this pose:

Lie flat on the floor with your feet flat on the floor. Place your arms by your side and bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor. Now, slowly raise your legs from the hips. Place your hands on your hips as you raise it and use them as support. Now slowly bend your legs at the hips and try to touch the floor behind your head with your toes and straighten your hands so they are flat on the floor. Breath out while going up. To return to the lying position gently roll your back  onto the floor, breath in while you come down. Do not drop down suddenly.

Tip to keep in mind: If you suffer from liver or spleen disorders, hypertension, have diarrhoea, are menstruating or have suffered a neck injury, avoid doing this pose.

Pranayam: This is probably the most easy asana out there.  Despite it being so easy, it is the most beneficial when it comes to glowing skin. Breathing in deeply and breathing out helps oxygenate your blood, and improves circulation. It also calms the mind and gives your rattled nerves some much needed rest. This is your one stop shop to de-stress and look beautiful.

Steps to do this pose: Sit on a mat on the floor. Fold your legs in either padmasana or sit cross legged. Now straighten your back, keep your chin parallel to the floor, place your hands on your knees with your palms facing upwards and close your eyes. Breath in deep and hold your breath for five counts. Exhale slowly. Repeat this process at least ten time. Once you are done, rub your palms together till they are warm, and place them on your eyes. Now slowly open them and smile. (Read: How to choose your yoga class)

Savasana: Yoga Nidra or Shavasan is a way of experiencing total relaxation. Although it is called an asana or a posture – the body does nothing during shavasan – no stretching, no bending. You just lie down and leave all limbs and joints loose. Eyes are closed. You lie down like a corpse.

Steps to do this pose: Lie down with your eyes closed, leave your limbs loose, try and bring your attention to the tip of your nose and just observe the breathing process. Body should be absolutely still. Observing and being aware of the breathing process is the core of Shavasan. Whenever you inhale, you feel coolness in your nostrils and when you exhale you feel hot in your nostrils. Prince Harry to marry girlfriend Cressida Bonas: Report

Prince Harry to marry girlfriend Cressida Bonas: Report

Prince Harry to marry girlfriend Cressida Bonas: Report

Britain's Prince Harry could wed his girlfriend Cressida Bonas next year, a media report quoted his friends as saying.

The 29-year-old prince has his eyes set on marrying Bonas and their friends said the wedding could happen soon, according to The Telegraph.
The friends said Bonas, 24, initially thought she was too young to marry Prince Harry but had finally overcome her fears about marrying into the royal family. "Cressie is going to marry Harry," one of Bonas's friends told the newspaper.

"Harry never stops talking about marriage and children, and she has now got used to the idea. The wedding is likely to take place next year," the unnamed friend said. Harry is reportedly ready to the take the plunge like his older brother, Prince William, who recently welcomed his first child with the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

The prince was introduced to the British socialite in May 2012 by his cousin, Princess Eugenie of York, and was said to be 'smitten'.

Harry has previously said he has always wanted to have children, telling American talk show host Katie Couric he is looking for the right person to settle down with. One of Bonas's friends said: "Cressida has been in floods of tears. Harry is coming on very strong, but she is all over the place. She thinks she is far too young to get married and is scared by all his talk of marriage and settling down." But Harry persisted, the report said.

When he was sent to serve in Afghanistan in November, the pair were in regular telephone contact during his four-month posting. On his return, the "romance blossomed, with nights at the cinema and time spent among friends", the report said.

The pair have the "same sparkling sense of fun and relish a good party", it added. Bonas studied dance at Leeds University and graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire earlier this year. Her family, which has direct links to Edward VII, is "bohemian and entertaining — something the Prince is said to like about them".

Mood swings during periods driving you crazy? Here are tips to beat them

Mood swings during periods driving you crazy? Here are tips to beat them

by Pavitra Sampath

It's that time of the month and you are already feeling the effects of your periods. Irritability, weakness, bloating and acne; everything seems to be going wrong. Well, don't fret, we have some tips that will keep you calm, cool and comfortable during those days of the month.

Indulge in some self-pampering: This is the best time to invest in that relaxing foot massage or just bask in the soothing effects of a good aromatherapy treatment. Surround yourself with soothing music and scents. A relaxing environment makes a calmer you. (Read: Pedicure basics to keep your feet happy!)

Give in to your food cravings: During that time of the month it is normal to crave foods like chocolates, etc that might play spoilsport with your diet. But, as an exception, indulge yourself during this time. Try a little bit of chocolate or have those fries if you feel like it. While your body needs these foods to overcome its cravings, remember not to go overboard. According to leading nutritionist, Neha Chandna, 'Due to hormonal changes, you tend to crave for sweets. But try not to overindulge in them as they can just worsen your cravings. Instead of having sugar, you can opt for naturally healthy sweet foods like dates, jaggery, til chikki, dates, laddoos, etc. Try to eat a lot of fibre-filled foods like salads, fruits and nuts to stabilise your blood sugar levels and curb your sweet cravings.'

Keep calm with soothing breathing exercises: 'Just breathe', is common advice most of us get when we tend to get irritable. And those who tell you that, are probably right (even though you want to bash their heads in). Studies have proved that breathing deeply and meditating is the best way to gain control of your emotions and calm down.

Just sit in a comfortable place, close your eyes and breathe in deep. Hold your breath for five counts and breath out. Do not try to pull in your stomach or abdomen. Just let your body relax. Do this for about five minutes every day and watch yourself relax. Amulya R, a leading yoga expert says, 'The exhaling action of the breath when extended, tends to activate the parasympathetic nervous system in the body. This system is the counterpart of the sympathetic nervous system. It is that component which helps in bringing the body into the 'rest mode', in contrast to the sympathetic nervous system which helps in preparing the body for the 'fight-or-flight' response. Hence, by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, we are nudging the body into its relaxing and self-healing mode.' So just relax and breathe.

Take a break to relax your body: We all know that one's periods are a taxing time for the body so give it some rest. While lying in bed all day might not be the best thing, try to get some moments lying down during the day. If this is not possible, make sure you sit on a comfortable chair with adequate back support. Keeping your legs above ground level will also help a great deal in alleviating the pain and discomfort you feel. More importantly, avoid exercising as it can take an adverse toll on your body.

Avoid weakness by eating right: You have probably heard this advice a number of times but haven't really paid  much heed to it. Know that women are especially prone to deficiencies like anaemia  as they go through their periods every month. It is a time when we not only lose a lot of blood from our body, but also go through a number of hormonal changes. That is why it is essential that you eat healthy.

You should be number one on your list of priorities. According to Neha, 'It is extremely important to eat well during your periods as this is the time when a woman's body undergoes a lot of hormonal changes and blood loss. If you don't eat well, skip meals, eat a lot of junk foods and don't drink enough water, you may feel weak and affect your work productivity. It can also affect your skin, hair, nails and overall health.' (Read: 10 food items for women's health problems)

'A woman should eat a balanced meal including foods from all food groups like whole grains such as oats, jowar, brown rice, ragi (which have a lot of fibre and calcium), pulses and sprouts, green leafy veggies, eggs and fruits. One could also have one spoon of garden cress seeds also known as halim with milk twice a day to increase iron intake to beat diseases like anaemia,' she advises.

Your periods might be the toughest time of the month for you, but just eat healthy, rest and breathe, and you shall be more comfortable during your periods.

Look perfect on your wedding with these 7 weight loss tips

Look perfect on your wedding with these 7 weight loss tips

by Neha Chandna

Most women dream of having the perfect wedding where all eyes are on them and they look nothing less than a princess. In order to attain this, they fret and opt for extreme dieting or unhealthy ways to lose weight and spoil their health in the long run. But if you plan in advance and follow a healthy lifestyle, you can look stunning without having to compromise on your health. Here are seven tips by nutritionist Neha Chandna that every bride-to-be should follow.

Sleep well: Most brides forget what sleep is after they get hitched, worrying about the tiniest of things that can go wrong. But don't forget, sleep is the only time when your body recovers from all the stress it is going through during the day. And the good news is, a good night's sleep is an important part of your weight loss process as it stabilises your hunger hormones which help you control your appetite. (Read: Having trouble sleeping? Get help with these expert tips!)

Get a full body check-up: Before you begin with a meal or workout plan, it is essential to get yourself checked for any abnormalities in your body. Unbalanced blood sugar levels, hormonal levels, etc are also responsible for weight gain. Once your reports are clear, it will be easier to decide your meal and exercise plan. And in case you suffer from something, you can always get help and customise your weight loss programme. (Read: 10 life-saving health tests you should take)

Join a gym or fitness club: If you can motivate yourself and go for a brisk walk for an hour every day, kudos to you. But if you are one of those who keep pushing back your workout making every possible excuse in the book, you better enroll yourself in a gym, dance class, etc. 1 hour of exercise is a must to help you lose flab and look fab on your wedding. In the gym, get a fitness trainer who can carve out a plan according to your goals and work on your problem areas. (Read: 10 awesome fitness workouts for the perfect you!)

Drink plenty of water: Water is an excellent solvent and it dispells all the toxins from your body leaving you with a glowing skin, lustrous hair and a healthy body. It also helps balance all the reactions in your cells and keeps your metabolism up to help you lose weight. Drink at least 35 ml/kg body weight of water/day and even more if you are out in the sun to rehydrate yourself. (Read: Water is the fuel that keeps your body fit)

Eat small meals every 2-3 hours: Agreed, with all the wedding preparations, eating frequent meals could be a challenge. But all you need to do is plan your day smartly and make sure you carry your meals with you wherever you go so that you avoid missing them and eat junk food. Eating often increases your metabolism and helps you burn fat faster. (Read: Getting married? Here's a sample weight loss diet plan for brides-to-be)

Stay away from unnecessary fats and sweet: Avoid butter, ghee, cakes, pastries, desserts, fried foods, etc as these can only worsen your efforts to lose weight. Sweets can also give you a lot of mood swings and sugar cravings which you surely don't need amidst all the wedding preparations. (Read: 10 ways to beat sugar cravings)

Avoid binge drinking: Alcohol can play havoc with your weight loss plan and not to forget your skin as well. It will dehydrate you, make you lethargic, add a number of calories in a short time and will also show on your face – it will look dull and lifeless. Smoking too has a similar effect. In order to avoid all this, restrict your alcohol intake. (Read: Why drinking is bad for your weight loss regime)

Top 10 tips for stronger erections that last longer!

Top 10 tips for stronger erections that last longer!

by Sameer Jha

My penis size is 5 inches. Will it satisfy my wife? (Sex query of the ...

Most men do just fine when it comes to getting an erection but there will be times when things won't go so well down there. It won't be as hard or last as long as you want. After all, getting an erection is a complex procedure which involves your brain, heart and other external factors like arousal and anxiety. We give you ten ways to make sure that your little friend doesn't let you down when it matters the most:

Kick the butt

Smoking's blood cool isn't it? If only youngsters who start smoking knew the effect it will have on their sex lives, they'd never light up. It hardens your arteries and lessens blood flow to the penis.  According to men's health Physician and Medical Sex Therapist Dr Vijayasarathi Ramanathan, 'Smoking affects every system/organ of the body including sexual functioning. People need to understand that erection in men has a lot to do with a healthy heart, blood vessels. Smokers are twice as likely to get erectile dysfunction as non-smokers.' (Read: Kick the butt for your sex life)

Control your drinking habit

All the fun that you have intoxicating yourself comes at a cost. Moderate to heavy drinking has long been known to cause ED. It's far harder to get an erection when you're drunk, than when you're sober and long-term alcoholism is likely to cause kidney and nerve damage which will harm your sex life. (Read: 10 reasons why your sex life has fizzled out)

Stop worrying about your performance

It is important that you realise that the most important organ in your body is not your penis but your brain. A lot of people fail to get an erection just because they are too anxious or too nervous when the moment arrives, even if they are otherwise healthy. It can also be due to stress or the prospect of living up to the image of masculinity. Sex as it's portrayed in movies or porn is rarely like the real thing. Just remember that you have been naturally designed to perform sexual functions. Why be scared about it? (Read: Can performance anxiety cause erectile dysfunction?)

Kegels exercise

Kegels exercises are meant for exercising the muscles of your pelvic region, and can help you gain better control of your bladder as well as improve your sex life. An example of a kegels exercise will be – 'Imagine you are urinating and then try to stop the flow. Repeat this – squeeze, hold, release cycle 10 times, trying to hold for 10 seconds per squeeze.' (Read: Improve your sex life with these exercises)

Eat healthy

Eating the right foods is essential to have a healthy sexual life. A healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants can improve the quality of your erections by increasing the blood flow to your penis. Also, when it comes to avoiding food, most foods that are bad for your heart, are bad for your erections too because blood circulation is affected. Even if eating junk food won't give you an erectile dysfunction straight away, it may leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Surely, not something you'd like to feel if you are about to indulge in some intense sexual activity. (Read more: A to Z of Healthy Eating)

Just move it

Exercise can improve the blood flow in your body which helps your erections, and leave you feeling fresh and active.  Additionally, it can make you appear more attractive to your partner and leave you feeling sexier.  Also it will improve your cardiovascular health, which will make your heart healthier and get it pumping more blood down there when you need it.  (Read: Supercharge your cardio workout) Also, studies have shown that exercise is a sure-fire way to beat ED.

Connect mentally

A good erection, like we said before, involves a variety of different factors. Of course, your heart plays a part but so does your brain. To be fully aroused, you need to be emotionally connected. So get in the mood, before you decide to bring your little friend into action.

Last longer lubricants

According to a study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, adding a lubricant to your condom can help you last longer in bed. What's more, a study done on women found that they found sex to be more pleasurable, less painful and more satisfying when you use a lube. (Read: Try lubricants to give your woman that orgasm she deserves!)

Get more aroused, focus on foreplay

There's an ancient learning which says that if you have an axe and 4 hours to cut a tree, you should spend 3 hours on just sharpening the axe. Likewise, in sexual intercourse it is important to not be obsessed about penetration and indulge in activities like kissing, mutual masturbation, among others. It is not just a great way to have fun, and better for erections – it can help your partner as well since many women fail to orgasm through regular vaginal intercourse. (Read: Sex without the penis – it's possible!)

Switch off the porn

While it may be necessary to release your pent-up energy once in a while, and porn can help – being addicted to it is not good for your mental as well as physical well-being. Masturbating too often can affect your ability to be aroused when the time arrives, and that can keep a healthy erection at bay. (Read: Is porn giving me erectile dysfunction?)

If trying the aforementioned methods doesn't help your cause, it could be possible that you're suffering from erectile dysfunction which could be caused due to conditions like diabetes or heart disease. There are various impotency tests to check whether your problem is physical or psychological. If you're suffering from it, talk to a doctor or physician and do not pop Viagra or other pills indiscriminately.

Does your gym have these 10 IRRITATING personalities?

Does your gym have these 10 IRRITATING personalities?

by Nirmalya Dutta

What do you hate the most about your fellow gym goers? Is it their incessant chattering, their sweaty, smelly bodies or the fact that some of them seem to confuse the gym for their living room? Here are the top 10 kinds of people you're likely to run into in the gym who will make you feel particularly murderous:

 The Loudmouth

While the mobile has done great things for the world, completely revolutionising the dissemination of information, it has also given idiots a 24/7 talking device which should be surgically attached to their ears. This person will always be completely impervious to 'no mobiles please' signs and loves to chat away while working out. Then you'll again get to hear him/her complaining that they don't lose any weight after spending hours at the gym every day!

The Equipment Hogger

While hogger might not really be a word, we thought it was one that needed to be created to define this particular gym-goer type. The Hogger seems to live under the impression that he's the only one that has paid for membership and take their sweet time with every machine. They tend to exercise even more slowly when they see someone else waiting for the machine and make you want to unload all the free weights on his head.

The Sweater

Perhaps the most hated of all types of gym-goers, The Sweater leaves huge puddles of salty water wherever he goes. He leaves it on the bench, on the dumbbells, the mats and even the floors. To make up for his overactive glands, The Sweater is also blessed with a shameless gland which prevents him from feeling the any shame. He is also allergic to towels, tissues and other materials that can be used to wipe sweat.

The Know-It-All

Present without fail in every gym, this person looks friendly and amicable in the beginning and gives good-natured advice when you first enter the gym. Pretty soon, the drizzle becomes a torrent and it becomes a task to tell him to shut up and let you exercise in peace. (Also read: Gymming incomplete without a personal trainer)

The Laze-Around

The purpose of the gym is lost on this person who treats the gym like his living room. The Laze-Around is likely to be around the cardio equipment, moving along at a snail's pace. He hates going towards the weight section and if he does find himself in there, takes 20-minute breaks between each set.

 The Gaper

While this isn't a personality unique to the Indian subcontinent, they are far likelier to occur here having not seen the female of their species in gym clothes before (or so it appears). The Gaper's raison d'etre at the gym seems to simply check out women. He becomes particularly excited he spots a tank top or a short skirt. Understandably, the female of the species are extremely wary of him and it's his kind which makes many of them workout at home.

The Music Aficionado

There's always one person at the gym who irrespective of the exercise he's doing is extremely bothered about the kind of music that's playing in the gym. The DJ's chosen genre, song or beat never pleases him and the notion that he can get his own iPod to listen to is lost on him.

The Stinker

Similar and sometimes identical to The Sweater, the Stinker too shares a similar aversion to basic hygiene. Deodorants, sticks and other forms of body odour inhibitors just don't interest this man.

The Locker Room Slob

The Locker Room Slob is one who treats the bathroom like her own bathroom. She likes to leave objects on the floor like towels, tissues, gym clothes, cosmetics and other assorted items. She also has a tendency to spend an inappropriately long amount of time in the shower or laboratory and makes one more murderous by singing in the shower!

The Gossipers

This is one gym personality that likes to roam around in herds. They usually arrive in groups and seem least bothered with exercising. They behave like the gym's their local watering hole and spend hours discussing everything under the sun without working up a sweat.

So we told you our least favourite gym personalities. Do you have any you want to add to the list?

Health benefits of cinnamon (dalchini)

Health benefits of cinnamon (dalchini)
by Pavitra Sampath

Cinnamon or dalchini is a staple addition to curries, pulav and biryani, but did you ever think that that tiny little bark could protect you from a host of illnesses right from cancer to cough and cold? Well, it sure can. Here are the top ten health benefits of cinnamon:

Helps keep diabetes under check: According to a study published in the Diabetes Care Journal [1], cinnamon was a highly effective remedy against diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. The study stated that the spice has the ability to improve one's glucose levels and lipid levels by activating his/her insulin receptors. It also reduces the total serum glucose, triglycerides and the total cholesterol of a person since it stimulates the enzyme systems that regulate one's carbohydrate metabolism. Cinnamon also has amazing vasodialatory properties that help beat the risk of cardiovascular disease – a common condition seen in diabetics. (Read: Home remedies for diabetes)

Tip: Cinnamon tea is one of the most beneficial methods to beat diabetes. To make the tea, boil cinnamon in water for 15 minutes. The water will turn brown in colour, strain the liquid and drink. To add flavor you could add a few leaves of tulsi while boiling and add a spoon of honey for sweetness. Keep sipping on this tea throughout the day.

Can help delay the onset of Alzheimer's:  A study conducted at the Tel Aviv University [2] found that the extract of cinnamon, when administered on a daily basis to patients with Alzheimer's improved their longevity and bettered the locomotor defects they experience once afflicted with the disease. Cinnamon extract also known as CEppt, inhibits tau aggregation (tau is a type of protein that aggregates around that part of the nerves that is responsible for transmitting impulses of the brain) and filament formation (a process that is thought to be due to the accumulation of tau protein) which in turn protects the brain from the onset of Alzheimer's and can also help in slowing down the progression of the disease. (Read: Alzheimer's disease – it's more common than you think)

Tip: To help protect you from disease, have a teaspoon of freshly ground cinnamon with a little bit of honey. Have this every day on an empty stomach. If you find this mixture too pungent, try having it as tea.

Helps protect you from cancer: In a study done by the USDA (United States Agricultural Department), it was found that cinnamon extract was a potent weapon against leukaemia and lymphomas. The study found that the extract worked by blocking the path of certain components that were important for the regeneration of the cell, inhabited the further multiplication of cancerous cells, and slowly reduced their spread. It also found that the higher the amount of extract the better the results. Remarkably, the extract only inhibited the growth of unhealthy cells and left the healthy cells untouched unlike conventional therapies like chemotherapy, etc. (Read: Can herbal remedies beat cancer?)

Tip: Add cinnamon to your daily diet either by sprinkling it on your food or with honey.

Relieves arthritic pain: Cinnamon is packed with a compound known as cinnamomum, which has very strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that make it a great home remedy for arthritic pain. Its natural heating mechanism provides added relief to aching joints.

Tip: Grind cinnamon into a fine paste with water and apply on the aching joints. You can place a soft muslin cloth on the paste to keep the paste wet for longer.

Helps in digestion: Cinnamon is packed with mineral manganese, fibre, essential oils and calcium. The calcium and fibre combine with bile salts and help in their transport outside the body. The essential oils, help regulate the action of gastric juices on food, improves digestion, assimilation and its anti inflammatory properties helps reduce the inflammation caused due to indigestion, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and ulcers. Moreover the fibre content helps to relieve constipation and diarrhoea. (Read: 10 Home remedies for constipation)

Tip: To relieve a stomach upset have cinnamon tea infused with mint leaves about two to three times a day.

Helps with weight loss: Cinnamon has great digestive properties, it helps with weight loss by regulating the breakdown of carbohydrates and the production and use of insulin by the body. It also helps improve the digestion and assimilation of food within the body, helping one lose weight. (Read: Herbs for weight loss)

Tip: Drink cinnamon tea with a teaspoon of honey every day, half an hour before breakfast. Alternatively you could add cinnamon powder to your meal by sprinkling it on your salad, coffee or other foods.

Helps beat acne: Cinnamon is a common spice and flavouring agent but the essential oil it contains also has strong anti-microbial properties. The water activity of honey is very low and this means that it does not contain a lot of moisture which can promote the growth of microorganisms. Considering that pimples often arise from an infection within the pores of the skin, combining cinnamon with honey is an effective remedy. (Read: Herbal remedies to get rid of pimples)

Tip: Crush a little cinnamon, and add a bit of honey to make it into a paste. Now apply it on the pimple and leave for a few minutes. You can leave it on overnight also for added benefit. Wash off the paste with warm water and watch that pimple vanish.

Helps cure a cold and cough: Known for its antibiotic and body warming properties, cinnamon is a formidable remedy against a cold and cough. It not only helps to relieve the congestion commonly experienced with a cold, it is also great for a sore throat when combined with ginger, tulsi and honey.

Tip: Boil a small crushed piece of ginger, a few leaves of tulsi  leaves, crushed black pepper in two cups of water. Cover the vessel with a lid and let the mixture boil at a low heat. When the solution has simmered for about ten minutes, strain the liquid, add a teaspoon of honey and drink. It should be warm. This solution will not only soothe an irritated throat, it will also clear up the blocked nasal passage and sinuses.

Beats heart disease and atherosclerosis: Packed with fibre and calcium, cinnamon is great for the heart. Since the fibre and calcium and help transport bile salts outside the body, the body produces more bile salts for other bodily functions by breaking down cholesterol. This directly translates to lower cholesterol levels which protect the heart from blockages and the arteries from atherosclerosis.

Tip: Have a teaspoon of cinnamon powder everyday on an empty stomach. You can add honey or drink it with warm water.

How I trained Jessica Alba, my first client

How I trained Jessica Alba, my first client

by Ramona Braganza

Ramona Braganza, celebrity trainer tells us how she ended up training Jessica Alba and discovered the 3-2-1 fitness method.

Without looking for it, my first job as a trainer found me. And what an incredible opportunity it was. In 1998, a writer friend had just written a TV show called Dark Angel and approached me to train the actress on it – none other than Jessica Alba. When I first started working with Jessica, she was only 17. She was sweet and young, and almost like the sister I always wished I'd had.

People often ask me how I began my career in the fitness industry. I tell them I was always active as a child and teenager. Gymnastics was where I spent most of my spare time from ages 4 to 18, followed by over a decade of dancing with the NFL team the LA Raiders. I then moved into fitness contests, which gave me my first introduction to the world of bodybuilding. And then this amazing opportunity to train Jessica landed in my lap.

We worked on Dark Angel for two seasons and then continued together on various other movies, including Honey, Into the Blue and Fantastic Four. Being on the road was a great deal of fun but it was also challenging: time is limited and equipment can be too. And this was particularly true on our two-week shoot deep in the rain forests of Borneo.

There, I had to be creative. For cardio, I had Jess run around the resort pool. And bodyweight exercises replaced dumbbells to keep muscle tone. Then Jess came up with the idea of breaking the cardio up into segments. Our circuit of 3 exercises done 3 times, keeping reps high and weight medium, kept her heart rate up and gave her a quick workout she could do every morning before her 16-hour shoot day.

Over the years, the workout has adjusted depending on the movies we did. And it also got a name – the 3-2-1 Training Method.

Our biggest challenge came after the birth of her baby, Honor. A Campari ad she'd committed to had been scheduled less than three months after the birth, so this gave us a clear goal. We started training within two weeks after Honor was born. Luckily, a few months before this, I had already started workouts with another new mom and client of mine – Halle Berry. (How Ramona got Jessica and Halle to shed their post pregnancy weight)

This workout would eventually be named 3-2-1 Baby Bulge Be Gone and would also be used with client and new mom Ashley Simpson Wentz as she prepared for her role on Melrose Place. Jess had amazing results, dropping 25 pounds in two and a half months, but I credit a lot of her success to the continuous training she did from age 17-29. Her body was able to bounce back – just like Halle's and others mums who include a form of exercise into their daily lives.

In my life at 49, exercise has been a big factor in keeping me feeling and looking younger. I couldn't imagine life without activity. That's why a big part of my message to all young girls and women I meet is this: it's never too early or late to start. DO IT FOR YOU!

Ramona Braganza is a celebrity fitness trainer who is well known for training the likes of Jessica Alba, Halle Berry and Ryan Reynolds. However, they're not her only clients and she has transformed the lives of thousands across the globe with her 3-2-1 fitness method which consists of 3 cardio segments, 2 circuit strength training segments and 1 core segment. She is also specialises in post-pregnancy weight loss and is as adept at helping Hollywood's top ladies slim down as she is at helping her male clients add size and strength. Mid morning: 1 fruit + 4 almonds/ walnuts
Lunch: salad + 2 rotis/ 1 cup brown rice + veggies + dal + curds

Bedtime: 1 cup skim milk
If you haven't had the chance to focus on yourself with all the shopping and wedding arrangements, there is still time to tone-up your figure and look your best. You can follow this meal plan three months prior to the D-Day and drop a dress size.

Go for the glossy look this festive season

Go for the glossy look this festive season
by Agencies

Women often wonder whether to try matt make-up or glossy one. An expert says try glossy to make your face glow, but avoid it during summer or humid weather.

'Make-up that's matt will not have a wet shine or glow to it as the foundation has been settled with powder. When you are wearing matt make-up, a glow can be brought about by adding a powder blush or shimmer,' says make-up artist Renuka Pillai.

'Shine make-up or what I would rather call 'glossy', gives a more dewy effect as the foundation used is generally a liquid or a tinted moisturiser with minimal powdering. It gives a rather nice glow to the face,' she added.

She suggests to highlight cheekbones, add a bronzer or creamy highlighter.

Glossy make-up gives the glow that we thrive for, but Pillai says to check the season too.

'During summer season, try and keep it matt. Sometimes, glossy can get a little oily looking if there is humidity,' she explains. (Read: Make-up tips for the fresh-faced look)

Take a break from technology for the sake of your sanity!

Take a break from technology for the sake of your sanity!

by Mansi Kohli
My penis size is 5 inches. Will it satisfy my wife? (Sex query of the ...

Today, technology is prevalent in our lives and we are certainly used to if not dependent on it to a large extent. But most people fail to gauge in the potential negative consequences that it may produce in the long run.

Multitasking with technology has its drawbacks

One thing that technology has done for us is teach us to multi-task. Trying to squeeze in too much in too less time, we often eat while replying to emails on our phones or go for walks whilst chatting on our mobiles or even check our phones in the middle of the night to not miss out on the latest update. While this may be perceived as a good thing by many, there are some ill-effects of multi-tasking too much. (Read: Which of these 5 technology related health problems do you have?)

It can lead to problems in your attention, concentration, working memory and problem-solving capacity.
People who multi-task suffer from a mental burnout. As a result, they tend to be impulsive, erratic, depressed and angry.
If done over a longer period of time, multi-tasking impairs our capacity to learn and recall.
Researchers in psychology have found that people who multi-task experience a decline in their intelligence as compared to those who do not.
Trying to 'fit in' online will cost you

Today, people feel extremely unsure and undesirable about themselves. As a result, they chase possessions, technology, events and social media to create a desirable impression. They feel that if they are not 'out there' people will consider them undesirable and reject them. However, the sad part is that no matter whatever one does, this fear is never-ending. The person never feels reassured and spends the most productive time and resources of their life in getting unnecessary attention. (Read: Are you an internet addict?)

Are you missing out on real life?

For several people, expressing personal emotions on social media is to catch other people's attention. It makes them feel important that other people are following them, reading about them and discussing about their personal lives.

For some people social media has sadly become more important than real life. I recently saw a depressed 24-year-old who only had an online circle. Due to his internet addiction, he had drifted away from his friends and therefore had no option but to express his emotions on social media in order to feel lighter.

Some people who are inhibited or anxious to confront real life dilemmas find social media a safer bet to unload their emotional baggage. It is also easier for them to propose, accept and reject people on social media. They feel that they can get away with the immediate emotional reaction from others. (Read: Is Facebook strengthening or ruining friendships?)

Tips to reduce dependency on technology

Exercise your brain where you can: For matters where you can use your brain, do not bother using a gadget. Simple things, like doing mental mathematics and remembering numbers will go a long way in exercising your brain and keeping your memory healthy.

No gadget time or no gadget place: Make this simple rule. Every day, without fail have a no gadget time where you can dump all technology away, sit and daydream –this will enhance your creative thinking and problem solving abilities. Alternatively, you can make a 'no gadget space' in your home where you will be without any gadget. It is best to keep gadgets away from your bedroom so that you can relax and interact with your partner.

Overcome your fears: If you have social anxiety, confront it and heal it. Do not use social media as a shield. The more open you are about your feelings in the real world, the better you and people around you would feel. Also, if you overuse social media because of the fear of being left out, you need to reason out whether the fear is rational or irrational. Most of the time, such fears are irrational, based on little evidence. Challenge this fear in your mind and overcome it.

Stop notifications: Almost every other person has a smartphone these days which gives us minute-by-minute update of various things and people. Do you really need that all the time? It is good to be connected but letting it become a way of life isn't. If your job permits, make it a habit to switch off notifications after work or at least over the weekend. This way, you won't be staring at your phone every 2 minutes.

Log in, log out: Don't keep a tab of social networking sites open all day long on your computer. Log in, check out what you have to and then log out. You can do this multiple times a day and slowly bring down the number to once or twice a day.

Take out time for hobbies: When there is nothing else to do, you fiddle with your phone, playing games, looking up people's profiles, etc. Instead, read a book or talk to your sibling or go out for a walk. Think of things you can do in your spare time than staring at your phone.

Dumbbells – are they better than machines?

Dumbbells – are they better than machines?

by Nirmalya Dutta
My penis size is 5 inches. Will it satisfy my wife? (Sex query of the ...

Go into any gym and you'll be besieged with a variety of different machines – the Cable Pulley Machine, the Smith Machine and so many more that you'd feel like they have actually taken over. These days it's quite common to see many gym-goers who don't even approach the dumbbell rack, which begs the question, are machines better than dumbbells?

Dumbbells – Pros

Cheap, affordable and convenient

If you don't want to spend enormous amounts on a gym membership and want to workout at home then the dumbbell is your weapon of choice. Most of the gym machines would cost you a small fortune; on the other hand dumbbells are affordable, conveniently-shaped and easy-to-use. Of course if you're a buying a pair and want to do some serious training we suggest buying at least 3 different weight ranges because some of your muscles are more powerful than others (for example your shoulders or chest muscles can handle far more weight than your biceps) and also your body is likely to get used to the same weight range.

Better for your overall body

A workout with dumbbells takes more out of your body than machines because you need to always maintain good form and posture. While in a machine, the muscle you need to work on is isolated here you are required to make adjustments to your body to maintain proper form and posture which will work the smaller muscles throughout a body. On the whole you'll get more balanced, more coordinated and also become stronger because you will be using more muscles than when you're using a machine. (Exercises for bigger arms)

Dumbbells – Cons

Higher chance of injury

One of the major benefits of machines is that anyone can use them without much help. Your arc of motion is clearly defined and safeguards are in place to prevent injuries. Dumbbells on the other hand require a greater degree of control and expertise and we would actually advise you to show an expert to show it to you before you start pumping iron.

More isolated targeting with machines

One of the dumbbells' pros is actually a con too because while dumbbells work more muscles throughout your body, the machines help isolate the exact muscles you want to build and you might get more aesthetic results faster. (Get a chest like Hrithik with these exercises)

Verdict: It varies from person to a person but a complete workout should include both dumbbells and machines, depending on how comfortable you are in the gym and what your fitness goals are. That being said many bodybuilders prefer a mix of free weights and machines for a complete result.
